Hannelie Meyer

Hannelie Meyer is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Pharmacy and Management, at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) and Head of the South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre at SMU in South Africa. She is a pharmacist with 40 years’ experience within the South African academic, pharmaceutical and public health sectors, specialising in vaccine safety, vaccine confidence and vaccination as a pillar of antimicrobial stewardship.

She serves on the World Health Organization Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety, chairs the interim African Union Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee of the African Union Smart Safety Surveillance Programme, facilitating cross-country signal management for health products in Africa and is the co-chair of the Scientific Board of the Centre of Excellence for Pharmacovigilance in Southern Africa. She serves on the National Immunisation Safety Expert Committee (which she chairs), the National Advisory Group on Immunisation (NAGI) and the National Essential Medicines List Committee as NAGI representative.

She is a National Research Foundation rated scientist and collaborates with researchers across Africa and internationally. She has authored/co-authored more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 440 conference and invited speaker presentations at national/international meetings, and has supervised 102 postgraduate students to completion. In 2025 she received the PHILA Lifetime Achievement Award from the Public Health Association of South Africa.
